Jumping into Your Sea

Harav Hagaon Ahron David shlita

Parshas Acharei Mosโ€“Kedoshim

On Shviโ€™i shel Pesach, I was zocheh to experience Shiras Hayam with Rav Don Segal, and he said a short but very important shmuess, one that can give us life in this world. He quoted the Gemara (Berachos 20a), where Rav Pappa asked Abaye why nissim were performed for earlier generations and not for their own, even though their generation learned more Torah; Rโ€™ Yehudah, in a previous generation, learned only a certain portion of Seder Nezikin, while their generation learned all six sedarim!

Abaye gave a remarkable answer: The earlier generations, he said, were moser nefesh al kiddush Hashem, while their generation was not.

A person who wants nissim, who wants siyatta dโ€™Shmaya, has to be moser nefesh. This requirement is also reflected in the passuk in Parshas Kedoshim: ื•ึฐื ึดืงึฐื“ึทึผืฉึฐืืชึดึผื™ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนืšึฐ ื‘ึฐึผื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ืจึธืึตืœ.

When Nachshon ben Aminadav โ€” one individual โ€” jumped into the sea, the sea split. Rashi understands that this is the meaning of the words ื”ึธื™ึฐืชึธื” ื™ึฐื”ื•ึผื“ึธื” ืœึฐืงึธื“ึฐืฉืื•ึน (Tehillim 114:2); Nachshon was from Shevet Yehudah. We, too, must jump into the sea.

At times, we daven day and night for yeshuos, but we donโ€™t always see that Hashem answers. He is waiting for our mesirus nefesh, as He told Moshe, ื“ึทึผื‘ึตึผืจ ืึถืœ ื‘ึฐึผื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ืจึธืึตืœ ื•ึฐื™ึดืกึธึผืขื•ึผ. Rashi explains, surprisingly, that Hashem was saying, โ€œNow is not a time for lengthy davening, when Klal Yisrael are in distress.โ€ What does that mean? When Klal Yisrael are in distress, isnโ€™t that the very time for tefillah? The Ohr Hachaim explains that at times, when we donโ€™t have zechuyos, we have to be moser nefesh. When Hashem sees that we are being moser nefesh and going beyond our nature, He, too, will go beyond nature for us.

What we have to do is just go: ื“ึทึผื‘ึตึผืจ ืึถืœ ื‘ึฐึผื ึตื™ ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ืจึธืึตืœ ื•ึฐื™ึดืกึธึผืขื•ึผ. Thereโ€™s a sea in front of you? Be moser nefesh, and there wonโ€™t be a sea.

In life we often have a sea in front of us, figuratively, and we need siyatta dโ€™Shmaya in many areas. The key is to be moser nefesh, and the sea will split.

What You Respect, Respects You

Here are some examples.

Come to Shacharis early. Yes, itโ€™s hard, weโ€™re tired, weโ€™re burdened with many responsibilities, weโ€™re working. But davening is the mainstay of life, and if you come early, you will see major siyatta dโ€™Shmaya. By coming early, you show that you are mechabed tefillah, and then tefillah will be mechabed you.

Rโ€™ Eliyahu Baruch Finkel quoted Rโ€™ Chatzkel Levenstein as explaining that just as Dovid Hamelech could not be warmed by clothing because he had shown disrespect to clothing when he tore Shaulโ€™s garment, the same is true of everything in the world: whatever you respect, respects you back.

Be early to bed and early to rise. Come to davening early, and daven well. Say all the berachos first, then every word of Pesukei dโ€™Zimra. Say Az Yashir well, and that will be mesirus nefesh, a little bit of putting your heart into tefillah.

Another example of being moser nefesh: Do shnayim mikra well, a bit every day. This week we have two parshiyos, which makes it a bit hard to finish while learning Rashi well, but do every day a parshah (stopping at a sof parashah, as marked with with a samech or peh in a chumash), as the Gaon said. Rโ€™ Elyashiv learned one or two parshiyos every day. Learn Rashi, and youโ€™ll have what to say at the Shabbos table. You need to be moser nefesh a little, but whatโ€™s hard, do bโ€™ratzon.

Asking with Mesirus Nefesh

If you have sfeikos, ask rabbanim. Ask sheilos in halachah, in Gemara, in hashkafah.

The Gemara (Berachos 63b) quotes the passuk (Mishlei 30:32) ืึดื ื ึธื‘ึทืœึฐืชึผึธ ื‘ึฐื”ึดืชึฐื ึทืฉึผื‚ึตื and teaches that one who is โ€œmenabelโ€ himself for divrei Torah will ultimately be elevated. Rashi explains that this refers to someone who asks all his questions to his rebbi, even though his friends laugh at him for some of them. Even if people think your shailos are foolish, ask anyway. The rabbanim will answer you and youโ€™ll know what to do.

Yes, itโ€™s a little hard, itโ€™s embarrassing, you feel foolish, but ask anyway. Go to a rav, go to a rosh yeshiva or a maggid shiur. Ask them, call them, go to them.

If you learn Gemara and itโ€™s hard for you to understand, review the Gemara again and again. Rโ€™ Elyashiv reviewed the Gemara many, many times, again and again. He told me to learn Gemara forty times.

If you have questions, ask your chaveirim, ask your rebbeim, go to a shiur, ask the maggid shiur.

The Power of Ameilei Torah

We had a holy rebbi, Rโ€™ Chaim Kamil, who was a great gadol baTorah. During the last fifteen years of his life his eyesight was very poor and he lost his ability to read. Still, he said shiurim in Tifrach and Ofakim every week. I used to call him on the phone on Erev Shabbos and he would ask me to take out a Midrash and read him a particular passage. People would read to him, and he didnโ€™t become despondent, even though his whole life was learning Torah, and now he couldnโ€™t read. He knew everything, but now people read to him, and he continued saying shiurim throughout those fifteen years.

You donโ€™t have to jump into an actual sea, but you do have to tackle whatโ€™s a bit difficult for you, with ratzon and hislahavus.

The Ohr Hachaim (Parashas Beshalach) teaches that creation is subordinate to ameilei haTorah. That is why, when Rโ€™ Pinchas ben Yair stood before the river (see Chullin 7), it split for him. Moshe Rabbeinu split the Yam Suf before Mattan Torah, but after Mattan Torah the entire universe became subordinate to ameilei haTorah.

I once heard from a great talmid chacham that ameilei haTorah, who review the Gemara again and again until they understand it, are above teva.

When Hashem sees that youโ€™re going beyond teva and being moser nefesh, He will help you, in a way that is beyond teva. Heโ€™ll split the yam for you.

Once, the river near the city of Dvinsk was overflowing its banks, threatening to flood the city. The people summoned the priest, who yelled and yelled, but nothing happened. Then they called the Ohr Somayach, who instructed the river to recede. When it did not obey, he declared, โ€œI will put you in cherem.โ€ And the river immediately receded. Thatโ€™s the power of ameilei haTorah.

If we are moser nefesh, wherever we can โ€” in our shul, our yeshiva, our home, wherever itโ€™s a bit difficult for us โ€” Hashem will perform nissim for us.

Hashem should grant yeshuos to all of Klal Yisrael, and you should have siyatta dโ€™Shmaya and be healthy, happy, and successful.
