Shpitzer, Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shlita

The Pesach-Sefirah Continuum

Parashas Acharei Mos / Sefiras Haโ€™omer

Harav Hagaon Meir Tzvi Shpitzer Shlita

ย

This weekโ€™s parashah discusses the avodah of Yom Kippur and goral drawn on the two goats, one of which was consecrated to Hashem and the other of which went laโ€™azazel.

The goat that went to Hashem served as the greatest kapparah of the year, its blood being sprinkled inside the Kodesh Hakodashim, while the other goal was thrown down the mountain to an ignominious death. Obviously, this goral involved deep, hidden considerations that are beyond our comprehension, but we can nevertheless analyze it on a basic level that we can relate to.

The meforshim explain that the Torah is teaching us a lesson with this Yom Kippur goral. A person should know that has only two choices: he can dedicate his life to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, or he can go laโ€™azazel. A person shouldnโ€™t think that he can remain mediocre and coast through life without seeking to grow and improve. There are only two options, and someone who is not growing is going laโ€™azazel. This idea is conveyed through Har Gerizim and Har Eival as well: the two mountains reflect the idea that itโ€™s either this or that. Similarly, Shlomo Hamelech says, in Mishlei: ืึนืจึทื— ื—ึทื™ึผึดื™ื ืœึฐืžึทืขึฐืœึธื” ืœึฐืžึทืฉื‚ึฐื›ึผึดื™ืœ ืœึฐืžึทืขึทืŸ ืกื•ึผืจ ืžึดืฉึผืึฐืื•ึนืœ ืžึธื˜ึผึธื” โ€“ a person has to strive to grow and become greater in order to avoid going downhill. Thereโ€™s no remaining static; if youโ€™re not going up then youโ€™re going down.

This message is particularly relevant to the days of Sefiras Haโ€™omer. The Torah instructs us to start counting ืžึดืžึผึธื—ึณืจึทืช ื”ึทืฉึผืึทื‘ึผึธืช, and the Gemara explains that this means the day after the first day of Pesach, when Yetzias Mitzrayim occurred. The Tzedukim, however, understood ืžึดืžึผึธื—ึณืจึทืช ื”ึทืฉึผืึทื‘ึผึธืช literally, to mean the day after Shabbos. It is evident, from many examples brought in the Gemara, that they were desperate to convince the chachamim that Sefiras Haโ€™omer should begin on a Motzaei Shabbos. They went as far as to send false witnesses to beis din so that Rosh Chodesh would be observed on the day that suited the Tzedukim and ensured that Sefiras Haโ€™omer would begin on Motzaei Shabbos.

It is equally evident that the chachamim went to great lengths to show that we reject the interpretation of the Tzedukim. Indeed, the Gemara in Chagigah states ย that Chazal designated the day the Tzedukim observed Shavuos, according to their counting of the Omer, for hesped and fasting, as a public declaration that their counting is erroneous.

Why did Chazal deem this issue so critical as to warrant a major fight against the Tzedukim?

The Shem MiShmuel explains that the desire of the Tzedukim to start Sefiras Haโ€™omer on Motzaei Shabbos, rather than on Motzaei Yom Tov, stemmed from the way they viewed Yetzias Mitzrayim. As far as they were concerned, our emancipation from Mitzrayim and achievement of independent nationhood was a goal in its own right. The Torah, however, views Yetzias Mitzrayim purely as a means of bringing us closer to Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Immediately after leaving Mitzrayim and experiencing the miracles of Yetzias Mitzrayim, we start counting toward Kabbalas HaTorah. In fact, the Sefer Hachinuch says that we should really start counting on the fifteenth of Nissan, the day of Yetzias Mitzrayim, but weโ€™re so busy then with the mitzvos of the first day of Pesach that the Torah defers the counting to the next day. Either way, the counting toward Kabbalas HaTorah begins immediately after Yetzias Mitzrayim because it is the purpose of Yetzias Mitzrayim.

The tzedukim, on the other hand, viewed Yetzias Mitzrayim as an end in and of itself. For those who are interested, Klal Yisrael will take place seven weeks later, but thereโ€™s also the option of settling for Yetzias Mitzrayim alone, without Kabbalas HaTorah. That option is reinforced by the distancing of Pesach from Sefiras Haโ€™omer, which is why the Tzedukim were so insistent that Sefirah begin on Motzaei Shabbos rather than Motzaei Yom Tov.

The Shem MiShmuel notes that the wording of the counting of the first day of Sefirah reflects our opposition to the view of the Tzedukim. We say ื”ื™ื•ื ื™ื•ื ืื—ื“ ื‘ืขื•ืžืจ, even though it would be more correct to say: ื”ื™ื•ื ื™ื•ื ืจืืฉื•ืŸ ื‘ืขื•ืžืจ, to show that we are not counting from Sunday โ€“ ื™ื•ื ืจืืฉื•ืŸ โ€“ like the Tzedukim, who always began counting on Sunday.

No Breaks

When we drink the four kosos at the Seder, we are machmir for the opinion of the Rosh, who holds that one may not eat or drink after the afikomen (other than the third and fourth kosos). The Rishonim cite the Yerushalmiโ€™s opposing view, which is that drinking is permitted after the fourth kos, but is not permitted between the third and fourth kosos. The Yerushalmi does not explain this halachah, but the Imrei Emes and the Shem MiShmuel suggest that it is an outgrowth of the correlation between the four kosos and the four leshonos of geulah. The meforshim note that these expressions of freedom relate to the different stages of Galus Mitzrayim, as described in Bris Bein Habesarim. Stage one of the galus was actually going down to Mitzrayim: ื’ึตืจ ื™ึดื”ึฐื™ึถื” ื–ึทืจึฐืขึฒืšึธ ื‘ึผึฐืึถืจึถืฅ ืœึนื ืœึธื”ึถื. Stage two was having to work for the Mitzriyim: ื•ึทืขึฒื‘ึธื“ื•ึผื. Stage three was being afflicted: ื•ึฐืขึดื ึผื•ึผ ืึนืชึธื. The first lashon of geulah, ื•ึฐื”ื•ึนืฆึตืืชึดื™, refers to the end of the affliction of ื•ึฐืขึดื ึผื•ึผ ืึนืชึธื. The second, ื•ึฐื”ึดืฆึผึทืœึฐืชึผึดื™, refers to the end of the subjugation of ื•ึทืขึฒื‘ึธื“ื•ึผื. The third, ื•ึฐื’ึธืึทืœึฐืชึผึดื™, refers to the end of our stay in Mitzrayim,ื’ึตืจ ื™ึดื”ึฐื™ึถื” ื–ึทืจึฐืขึฒืšึธ ื‘ึผึฐืึถืจึถืฅ ืœึนื ืœึธื”ึถื .

Those three leshonos are followed by ื•ึฐืœึธืงึทื—ึฐืชึผึดื™, Hashemโ€™s taking us to be His people through our acceptance of the Torah.

When the Yerushalmi instructs us not to drink between the third and fourth kosos, it is conveying to us that the redemption from Mitzrayim โ€“ represented by the first three kosos, which correspond to ื•ึฐื”ื•ึนืฆึตืืชึดื™, ื•ึฐื”ึดืฆึผึทืœึฐืชึผึดื™, and ื•ึฐื’ึธืึทืœึฐืชึผึดื™ โ€“ is inextricably connected to what comes afterward: Kabbalas HaTorah. We donโ€™t interrupt between the third and fourth kosos because we donโ€™t want to give the impression that Yetzias Mitzrayim was a goal in its own right. Rather, the purpose of Yetzias Mitzrayim, and the Sefiras Haโ€™omer that follows it, is ื•ึฐืœึธืงึทื—ึฐืชึผึดื™ โ€“ becoming Hashemโ€™s nation at Har Sinai.

The Yerushalmi goes on to note a similar pattern with the Arba Parashiyos. These parashiyos are not all read on consecutive Shabbosim; there can be a break between them. The only two that are always read on consecutive Shabbosim are Parashas Parah and Parashas Hachodesh, the third and fourth, respectively. Like the third and fourth kosos, there can be no break between them.

The Shem MiShmuel explains that the parashiyos of Shekalim, Zachor, and Parah represent the distancing of Klal Yisrael from the cardinal bad middos of kinah, taavah, and kavod. Parashas Shekalim discusses how Klal Yisrael gave their money for the ruchniyus of the Beis Hamikdash, thus distancing themselves from kinah. Parashas Zachor discusses the vanquishing of Amalek, the nation that epitomizes taavah. And Parashas Parah discusses the parah adumah, whose avodah involves the lowly eizov and shni tolaas, representing the opposite of kavod.

A person has to work hard to distance himself from kinah, taavah, and kavod, but he should not stop there; even after he has uprooted these bad middos from himself, he should not think that he can rest on his laurels. He has to continue to grow. This message is conveyed by the fact that Parashas Parah is immediately followed by Parashas Hachodesh: ื”ึทื—ึนื“ึถืฉื ื”ึทื–ึผึถื” ืœึธื›ึถื ืจึนืืฉื ื—ึณื“ึธืฉืึดื™ื, signifying the new opportunity to shteig, going from Yetzias Mitzrayim through Sefiras Haโ€™omer to Kabbalas Hatorah.

Just as there is no break between Parashas Parah and Parashas Hachodesh, and no break between the third and fourth kosos, there can be no break between Yetzias Mitzrayim and the beginning of Sefiras Haโ€™omer: ื•ึผืกึฐืคึทืจึฐืชึผึถื ืœึธื›ึถื ืžึดืžึผึธื—ึณืจึทืช ื”ึทืฉึผืึทื‘ึผึธืช.

When we read, in Parashas Acharei Mos, about the goral of the two goats, we are reminded that there are only two ways before us: goral echad laShem and goral echad laโ€™azazel. This is especially important to remember now, during Sefirah, when we work on removing ourselves from Mitzrayim and going forward toward Kabbalas HaTorah. May we be zocheh to be the goral echad laShem by introducing ruchniyus into our lives and coming closer to Hashem.
