Running After Hashem

Parashas Mattos-Masei/The Three Weeks

Harav Hagaon Ahron David shlita

We are now in the Three Weeks, which are days of mourning for the churban Beis Hamikdash โ€”the root of all the tzaros of Klal Yisrael in all generations. During these weeks, we need to do teshuvah, so that Hashem will give us back the Beis Hamikdash and bring yeshuos for all the tzaros of Klal Yisrael.

One area in which we need to do teshuvah during the Three Weeks is bein adam lโ€™chaveiro. One fundamental idea relevant to this area can be learned from Parashas Mattos, where the Torah says, regarding nedarim: In other words, everything we say is really hekdesh; our words are holy.

Hashem imbued a person with a ืจื•ื— ืžืžืœืœื, as the Targum teaches, granting us the Divine power of speak and intellect, so everything we say is automatically holy. If you tell a friend youโ€™ll meet him somewhere, or youโ€™ll help him do something, your words are kadosh. And if we make sure to fulfill everything we tell our friends, our children, and our spouse, then our words are hekdesh. This quality of keeping your word is a middah of gadlus.

R’ Nosson Freund explains that the subject of the ื™ึทืขึฒืฉึถื‚ื” (in the passuk ืœึนื ื™ึทื—ึตืœ ื“ึฐึผื‘ึธืจื•ึน ื›ึฐึผื›ึธืœ ื”ึทื™ึนึผืฆึตื ืžึดืคึดึผื™ื• ื™ึทืขึฒืฉึถื‚ื”) is Hashem, meaning that if you are not mechallel your words and make sure to keep to them, then Hashem will fulfill what you say, because your words are hekdesh.

R’ Chaim Brim related the following story, which he heard from the Mirrer rosh yeshiva, R’ Beinish, who heard it from his shver, R’ Shmuel Greinemen, the shamash of the Chofetz Chaim. Once, the Chofetz Chaim had to travel to a different city to take care of a certain communal issue, and after that issue was dealt with, he and R’ Shmuel headed back to Radin, a journey that required them to switch trains in a different city. The train system in Poland was very punctual, and they had only six minutes to switch to the second train. Considering that the Chofetz Chaim was already very old and couldnโ€™t walk well, R’ Shmuel knew that it was impossible for them to get to the second train on time, so he told the Chofetz Chaim that they would have to stay in that city overnight. But the Chofetz Chaim said, โ€œNo, we are returning to Radin today.โ€

They arrived at this city a minute and a half late, due to a delay, which left them only four-and-a-half minutes to get to the second train. They walked slowly to the train, while everyone else was running to catch it, but then, suddenly, a new train appeared, blocking the train to Radin. A commotion ensued, and in the time that elapsed, R’ Shmuel and the Chofetz Chaim made their way to the train, and when they came to the new train that was blocking the other one, lo and behold, it turned out that this was the train to Radin. The driver of the train had made a mistake and driven the train on the wrong track. (R’ Chaim Brim would joke that in Poland that meant the driver would either be sentenced to life imprisonment or would be hanged; thatโ€™s how severe a crime it was to drive on the wrong track.) But in the end, the words of the Chofetz Chaim came true: Since his words were kadosh, Hashem fulfilled whatever he said.

We have to do teshuvah and be strong in fulfilling the words we say to people, not profaning them. Then, our words will be hekdesh, and there will be a wonderful kesher between people.

Rodfei Kah

Another fundamental lesson for this time can be learned from the passuk in Eichah that says: ื›ึธึผืœ ืจึนื“ึฐืคึถื™ื”ึธ ื”ึดืฉึดึผื‚ื™ื’ื•ึผื”ึธ ื‘ึตึผื™ืŸ ื”ึทืžึฐึผืฆึธืจึดื™ื. Simply understood, this means that people who chase after Klal Yisrael will overtake them during Bein Hametzarim, which is a dark time. But R’ Chaim Brim explains that the word ืจึนื“ึฐืคึถื™ื”ึธ can be split into two words โ€” rodfei Kah โ€” and understood to mean โ€œthose who pursue Hashem.โ€ Those people will get to Hashem during Bein Hametzarim.

What does that mean?

All year Hashem is in His palace, kivyachol โ€” a big palace in Heaven that has many rooms, and many guards, so it is difficult to get to the king. During these weeks, however, we are in galus and Hashem is with us, so we can get to Him more easily. In that sense, this is the highest time of the year.

But how do you run after Hashem?

We say in Hodu: This is how you seek Hashem: by singing to Him, and by looking at all the chessed that He does for us. Every Yid in the world experiences Hashemโ€™s chessed day and night, as the Mesillas Yesharim teaches (ch. 8) that there is no person โ€” poor or rich, healthy or sick โ€” who does not see niflaโ€™os in his life. If you open your eyes youโ€™ll see nissim and niflaโ€™os around you, everywhere in the world. To seek Hashem, then, you need to praise Him: ืฉึดืื™ืจื•ึผ ืœื•ึน, ื–ึทืžึฐึผืจื•ึผ ืœื•ึน, ืฉึดื‚ื™ื—ื•ึผ.

In this vein, R’ Wolbe offered a beautiful explanation of the slight divergence between two phrases in Kiddush of leil Shabbos. First, we say: ื•ึฐืฉืึทื‘ึผึทืช ืงึธื“ึฐืฉืื•ึน ื‘ึผึฐืึทื”ึฒื‘ึธื” ื•ึผื‘ึฐืจึธืฆื•ึนืŸ ื”ึดื ึฐื—ึดื™ืœึธื ื•ึผ, referring to Hashem in third person, and then we say: ื•ึฐืฉืึทื‘ึผึทืช ืงึธื“ึฐืฉืึฐืšึธ ื‘ึผึฐืึทื”ึฒื‘ึธื” ื•ึผื‘ึฐืจึธืฆื•ึนืŸ ื”ึดื ึฐื—ึทืœึฐืชึผึธื ื•ึผ, switching to second person. R’ Wolbe explained that if we praise Hashem, He becomes near to us, so after praising Him we can address Him directly. This is based on Rashiโ€™s statement (Berachos 4b) that when you praise Hashem, youโ€™re bringing Him close.

Perhaps this is what it means to be rodfei Kah: Praise Hashem during these Three Weeks, and thank Him for all His chessed, no matter what situation youโ€™re in, and youโ€™ll bring Him close to you. Similarly, we can ask Hashem for the yeshuos we need.

The Segulah of Praising Hashem

R’ Shimshon Pincus writes, in Sheโ€™arim Bโ€™Tefillah (Shaar Harinah), that a certain city experienced a severe famine, when rain did not fall for a lengthy period. They declared fast days, but nothing happened. Then, they declared a day of Yom Tov, with singing and praising Hashem, and it started raining. Thatโ€™s because rinah opens the gates of Heaven. There is no greater segulah, says R’ Pincus, than praising Hashem and singing to Him. Indeed, the passuk in Eichah states, about the churban: ืงื•ึผืžึดื™ ืจึนื ึดึผื™ ื‘ึทืœึทึผื™ึฐืœึธื”, implying that rinah opens the gates of Heaven.

A mohel named R’ Lang related that R’ Abramsky said that in his youth, he once stayed in a small hotel. There was an old man next door, and in the middle of the night the man started screaming, so R’ Abramsky told the owner of the hotel that the man must be very sick. โ€œNo, donโ€™t worry,โ€ he replied. โ€œItโ€™s the Chofetz Chaim. Thereโ€™s nothing wrong with him.โ€ R’ Abramsky was excited to meet the Chofetz Chaim, whom he had never met, so he entered his room without knocking and saw the Chofetz Chaim sitting on the floor, in the middle of the week, saying Nishmas with great fervor, while waving and crying, and he was enveloped in light.

Saying Nishmas opens the shaarei Shomayim, so say Nishmas with your whole heart. Sing to Hashem, praise Him, thank Him for the nissim and niflaโ€™os, and then Hashem will bring nissim and niflaโ€™os into your life, every day. Every Shemoneh Esrei, in Modim, we should thank Hashem for His nissim โ€” and between each tefillah, many nissim happen as well, so we can sing in between these tefillos, too; maybe not with music, but with our mouth.

There are two brothers in the Mir, chashuveh avreichim whose father was in the camps during the war, and after the war he married and had three children, all talmidei chachamim. They told me that their father related that when he was in the camps, in terrible conditions, he sang whenever he could, all day, the passuk: ื—ึทืกึฐื“ึตื™ ื”’ ื›ึดึผื™ ืœึนื ืชึธืžึฐื ื•ึผ ื›ึดึผื™ ืœึนื ื›ึธืœื•ึผ ืจึทื—ึฒืžึธื™ื•. He and others around him sang this for hours and hours and hours, and they were saved, and they married and built families.

May Hashem help us to sing all day and all night, ื—ึทืกึฐื“ึตื™ ื”’ ื›ึดึผื™ ืœึนื ืชึธืžึฐื ื•ึผ ื›ึดึผื™ ืœึนื ื›ึธืœื•ึผ ืจึทื—ึฒืžึธื™ื•, and to extol His niflaโ€™os, so that we can be rodfei Kah during Bein Hametzarim. Everyone in Klal Yisrael, wherever they are, should have hatzlachah and yeshuos โ€” in shidduchim, health, parnassah, and chinuch โ€” and Hashem should bring a hatzalah to all of Klal Yisrael.
