Who Are You Really?
Parashas Lech Lecha
Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz shlita
The Gaon and other sefarim hakedoshim teach that all the nisyonos that the Avos underwent are a lesson to all of us, because every part of the Torah is relevant to all of us. Everyone undergoes their version of the nisayon of lech lecha.
Lech lecha did not mean that Avraham should merely leave the place where he lived. Rather, it involved forgetting the place he had come from. By way of analogy, some people leave America but remain Americans for the rest of their life. The avodah of lech lecha was for Avraham to detach himself not only from his physical location, but also from the hashkafos and essence of that place. The example the Midrash brings is that Avraham saw that the people in his place were eating, drinking, engaging in frivolity, and getting drunk. In other words, they would spend much of their time goofing off and having a good time, just as people today spend their days watching movies. And Avraham Avinu decided he didnโt want to be part of that place, so Hashem told him lech lecha.
The Midrash is teaching that there was a prelude to the nisayon of lech lecha โ Avraham looked at his environment, saw what people were busy with, and decided that he wanted no part of that. Only then did Hashem tell him: Lech lecha.
The same can be applied to the galus weโre in now. Weโre surrounded by people whose worldview involves chasing money and fun, and we, too, need to leave these hashkafos that surround us: lech lecha.
For Avraham, the nisayon was to travel to Eretz Yisrael. But the Torah doesnโt specify that Eretz Yisrael was Avrahamโs destination, because the primary goal of his journey was to leave the place he was in and move away from that kind of lifestyle. Conceptually, Eretz Yisrael exists in chutz laโaretz as well, as the Gemara teaches (Berachos 8):ืืืื ืฉืืจื ืืืช ืืืงืืฉ ืืื ืื ืืืงื”ื ืืขืืืื ืืื ืืจืืข ืืืืช ืฉื ืืืื ืืืื. The Nefesh Hachaim (end of shaar 4) explains that Gemara is conveying that the place of hashraโas haShechinah in our time, paralleling the Beis Hamikdash, is mekomos haTorah, where Yidden sit and toil to learn Torah. When people seek out those mekomos hakedoshim, that is lech lecha.
Itโs interesting to note that the Midrash says that Avraham was bothered that the people around him were wasting time and not working. When a person goes out to work, heโs doing something worthwhile, for supporting oneโs family is a mitzvah. Lech lecha was said specifically with regard to the pursuit of leisure and fun. Nowadays, however, some people are busy chasing money not just to earn a living, but because they seek kavod: The car they drive, the clothing they wear, the house they live in, their lifestyle โ thatโs what gives them chashivus. Unfortunately, many Yidden are pulled in by this non-Jewish hashkafah, which is a big nisayon, and they, too identify themselves by how much Olam Hazeh they have. This causes people to forget about Hashem and to forget the mitzvos. Of course we know there is a Hashem, but weโre not living with Him.
Thatโs the nisayon of Avraham: Lech lecha, leave those places that are dangerous for us, those hashkafos, that lifestyle that is so antithetical to our worldview, and go look for a different lifestyle.
The command given to Avraham was lech lecha, and the Zohar Hakadosh and the Sfas Emes explain that this means: ืืขืฆืื, meaning โ find yourself, who you really are. Because the society that we live in is not who we are. We are not the amount of money we make, we are not the cars that we drive, we are not the clothes that we wear. So who are we really? We really are made up of the actions we do, the thoughts we feel in our heart, and the middos that we act with. Because what makes up the person is the way he lives his life.
Hashem was telling Avraham Avinu that when youโre in such a society, it pulls you away from who you are, and you could lose your identity and take on a new identity. And weโre not just talking about having people call you Mike instead of Moshe. Rather, you can lose your whole sense of whatโs important in this world, and of who you are.
Lech lecha means to be oved Hashem and find the real value in life by being somebody who does mitzvos, who learns Torah, who has good middos. Thatโs the real mahus haโadam. Lech โ go out of the society youโre living in, Hakadosh Baruch Hu told Avraham, and lecha โ find yourself.
Afterwards, Avraham went and made his eishel, symbolizing the chessed of Avraham. He left a certain kind of society and he was able to find himself and discover his uniqueness. And with his subsequent nisyonos, culminating with the Akeidah, he grew more and more.
We have to embark on a journey to find ourselves, because this process is not going to come naturally. The society weโre in now is an environment of galus, which is going to suck us in and make us lose our identity and lose sight of why weโre here in the world.
Thatโs the nisayon of Avraham Avinu: Lech lecha, to take a journey in life. We see so many baalei teshuvah who come to baal teshuvah yeshivos and grow to great heights, and so many bochurim who come to learn in yeshivos and uplift themselves. Sometimes we feel, as life goes on and we get older, that they, the young boys, can make this change, but us? Weโre older! How is this relevant to us?
Yet Avraham Avinu was an older man at the time that lech lecha was said โ he was in his seventies! Thereโs always time for change and growth, and thatโs what weโre here in the world to do, at any age. Every person, at his age and his level, has nisyonos to overcome. In fact, at a later stage in life we have to be even more focused on growing, because when weโre in yeshiva, learning Torah and growing every day is natural. Once we get older and go out into the world, the nisyonos are far greater, and itโs much easier to lose sight of yourself.
Where Are You Heading?
Parashas Lech Lecha is a time to renew our goals in life and strengthen our commitment to working toward those goals and withstanding our nisyonos. Itโs a time to ask ourselves: Where am I heading in life?
When you ask a young boy what he wants to be when he grows older, some will say a talmid chacham, some will say a doctor or a lawyer. But when you ask an older man of sixty-five what he wants to be, heโll answer โ what do you mean? I am already!
You are already? What does that mean? You have a life to live, you have so much ahead of you! Where are you heading? What are you doing? What are you striving for? What goals are you setting? Whether in Torah, in chessed, in middos, in tefillah โ keep your sheโifos alive! Keep growing!
Thatโs the other meaning of lech. The first meaning was to leave, to go away from your area and the nisyonos of galus, lecha, to find yourself. But the Sfas Emes adds that lech has another meaning: to be a mehalech โ a growing person, always going higher and higher. Thatโs what we call a ben aliyah. Life is one big mountain โ ืึดื ืึทืขึฒืึถื ืึฐืึทืจ ื’ โ and our avodah in life is to keep climbing, because, as the Gaon teaches regarding the passuk ืึนืจึทื ืึทืึดึผืื ืึฐืึทืขึฐืึธื ืึฐืึทืฉึฐืืึดึผืื ืึฐืึทืขึทื ืกืึผืจ ืึดืฉึฐึผืืืึนื ืึธืึธึผื, if a person is not heading upward, automatically heโll be heading downward. We always have to seek to grow, to look for areas in which we can improve, and to set ruchniyusโdikeh goals so that weโre heading somewhere.
So where are you heading? Are you heading in the right direction? Letโs say youโre going on a trip, and you enter the airport. If you want to reach your destination, you need to head to the right gate. If you go to the wrong gate, youโre heading in the wrong direction, and you wonโt get to the place you want to reach. Similarly, which shaar in this world are you heading to? Are you going to find yourself? These are the questions we have to ask ourselves during the journey of lech lecha. And if we do ask ourselves these questions, we can inspire ourselves to find a beautiful version of ourselves and a magnificent future.
Lech leads to Kol
Lech has the same letters and gematria as the word kol. Avraham was zocheh to be blessed bakol, why? Because he left behind the nisyonos of this world, of the galus that he was in, and lifted himself up. He was constantly growing and looking to improve himself โ lech โ and thatโs why he blessed with kol.
Avraham Avinu serves as a lesson to all of us how we can be zocheh to a life filled with all the brachos: kol. So letโs together be mekabel to take this step in life of becoming a mehalech, as the passuk in Kohes says: ืึดึผื ืึนืึตืึฐ ืึธืึธืึธื ืึถื ืึตึผืืช ืขืึนืึธืืึน. We need to be heading in the right direction, to be lech. And with Hashemโs help, if we take that step together, following in the footsteps of the Avos, each one of us will be zocheh to all the brachos, and will find himself becoming a beautiful person. And if enough of us take this step, weโll be zocheh that Hashem will bring us all back and give us Eretz Yisrael one more time, with the geulah haโasidah, may it come speedily.
