Elul Vision

Parashas Ki Savo

Harav Hagaon Yehuda Wagshal Shlita

This coming Motzaei Shabbos, im yirtzeh Hashem, weโ€™re going to start saying Selichos, as per our minhag. The Shulchan Aruch says that the minhag of Selichos for the bnei Ashkenaz begins on Motzaei Shabbos, a minimum of four days before Rosh Hashanah. The Mishnah Berurah states that one reason for the four-day requirement is that thereโ€™s a halacha that before a korban is brought in the Beis Hamikdash, it must be inspected for four days to ensure that it has no blemishes โ€” a process known as bikur mumin. The Mishnah Berurah explains that this requirement applies to us, as well, before Rosh Hashanah. On Rosh Hashanah we are expected to offer ourselves as a korban, as the Torah says, regarding the korbanos of Rosh Hashanah โ€“ ื•ึทืขึฒืฉึดื‚ื™ืชึถื ืขึนืœึธื”, instead of the usual ื•ึฐื”ึดืงึฐืจึทื‘ึฐืชึถึผื ืขึนืœึธื”. This implies that we are obligated to offer ourselves as a korban olah, and just as a korban olah required inspection before being brought in the Beis Hamikdash, the four days of Selichos are a time to inspect our own mumin to make sure that the korban we offer of ourselves as on Rosh Hashanah will be a kosher korban, with no blemishes.

Yet a Mishnah teaches that a person is disqualified from inspecting the mumin of his own bechor (firstborn animal), and from inspecting his own nega, in the case of suspected tzaraas: ื›ืœ ื”ื ื’ืขื™ื ืื“ื ืจื•ืื” ื—ื•ืฅ ืžื ื’ืขื™ ืขืฆืžื•. The reason a person can check anyone elseโ€™s bechor for a mum, or anyone elseโ€™s nega but not his own, is simple: A person is nogeiโ€™a bโ€™davar (partial) when it comes to his own mumin, and he therefore canโ€™t rely on his own judgment when checking the mum of his bechor or his own nega.

In that case, how can we expect a person to inspect his own flaws when preparing to offer himself as a korban on Rosh Hashanah? A person is not reliable when it comes to his own flaws, since he is blinded from seeing his own mumin!

Two Paths to Illumination

We daven every day, in Ahavah Rabbah: ื•ึฐื”ึธืึตืจ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ื ื•ึผ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนืจึธืชึถืšึธ. We can understand these words in two ways. On a simple level, these words mean that when we learn Torah, at times we miss things, so we daven that Hashem should illuminate our eyes so that we should have proper vision and understanding when we learn the Torah.

But thereโ€™s another way to understand these words: we are asking that the Torah illuminate all areas of our lives. The Torah has the ability to enlighten us regarding all topics and all areas of life. When making personal decisions, people are often blinded, so we daven to Hakadosh Baruch Hu that we should have good, clear vision in all areas of life, through the Torah that we learn.

This idea is reflected in the Gemara (Bava Basra 4) that relates that after Hordus killed out all the chachamim, with the exception of Bava ben Buta, he realized that he had made a grave mistake, and he regretted his actions, so he asked Bava ben Buta what he could do to rectify what he had done. One of the things Bava ben Buta told him was, โ€œYou blinded the eyes of the world, because talmidei chachamim are called einei haโ€™eidah, so go involve yourself in the eyes of the world โ€” namely, the Beis Hamikdash, which is called ืžึทื—ึฐืžึทื“ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ื›ึถื. Go beautify and rebuild it.โ€

We see from this Gemara that talmidei chachamim are called โ€œthe eyes of the world,โ€ because someone who learns Torah has vision.

How is it that when weโ€™re learning topics in Torah that seemingly have no relevance to current events, the Torah nevertheless illuminates our eyes and improves our vision in all areas? How does the Torah accomplish this? And how does the Beis Hamikdash, which is also termed โ€œthe eyes of the worldโ€ also accomplish this?

In order to understand how Torah and the Beis Hamikdash improve our vision, we first need to understand what takes away our vision. Why are people blind? Why donโ€™t they see things clearly, to the extent that they need the Torah or the Beis Hamikdash to improve the vision?

Beware of Bribes!

In Kovetz Maamarim, R’ Elchanan explains that the Torah teaches us what blinds people: ื›ึดึผื™ ื”ึทืฉึนึผืื—ึทื“ ื™ึฐืขึทื•ึตึผืจ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ ื—ึฒื›ึธืžึดื™ื ื•ึดื™ืกึทืœึตึผืฃ ื“ึดึผื‘ึฐืจึตื™ ืฆึทื“ึดึผื™ืงึดื. If a judge received any benefit from one of the litigants in a case that comes before him, he is disqualified from presiding over the case. Even if the benefit or gift he received from the litigant was unrelated to the case, and was not given in order to sway the judge in this litigantโ€™s favor, once the judge has been a beneficiary of a favor from a litigant, he is immediately disqualified. Thatโ€™s because as soon as someone benefits from someone or something, it becomes impossible to see the faults of that person or entity. This is not intentional โ€” the dayan does not wish to judge incorrectly or favor one litigant over the other. But the reality is that shochad blinds a person.

Thereโ€™s another kind of shochad, R’ Elchanan adds. When a person is the beneficiary of all the pleasures that the world and the yetzer hara have to offer, those pleasures become his source of satisfaction and chiyus, and then thereโ€™s no way he can look at his yetzer hara objectively and see his chesronos and mumin, or the negaโ€™im that this behavior brings upon him. Because heโ€™s living off these pleasures and benefiting from them, they serve as shochad that blinds him to the negative effect they have on him.

Once we understand the source of a personโ€™s blindness to his own flaws, we can also understand the meaning of the words ึฐื•ื”ึธืึตืจ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ื ื•ึผ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ึนืจึธืชึถืšึธ. When a person learns Torah, besides the knowledge and chochmas Elokim that he absorbs, he also finds the Torah to be a source of chiyus. When a person is properly connected to Torah, heโ€™s not as dependent on all the things that the yetzer hara and the world have to offer in order to feel satisfied and accomplished. He has an alternative, something much better โ€” the connection to Torah.

Similarly, the Beis Hamikdash, which is the place of hashraโ€™as haShechinah, affords the opportunity of a relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. Once a person finds his chiyus and satisfaction in life from his relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, the world becomes less of a source of shochad, and he is no longer as dependent on this world and the yetzer hara to provide him with pleasure and fulfillment. Thatโ€™s how we gain proper vision through the Beis Hamikdash as well.

Enlightened Eyes

At the beginning of Parashas Shelach, Hashem tells Moshe to send spies to examine and inspect Eretz Canaan: ืฉึฐืืœึทื— ืœึฐืšึธ ืึฒื ึธืฉึดืื™ื ื•ึฐื™ึธืชึปืจื•ึผ ืึถืช ืึถืจึถืฅ ื›ึฐึผื ึทืขึทืŸ. The Targum translates the word ื•ึฐื™ึธืชึปืจื•ึผ as ื•ึดื™ืึทืœึฐึผืœื•ึผืŸ, and some explain that this term alludes to the month of Elul, which is a time when we need to examine and inspect ourselves. But in order to be able to inspect something, you need vision. Where can we find the vision we need for Chodesh Elul? From our relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, as we know that Elul is a time of Once youโ€™re in a relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu, itโ€™s as though youโ€™re in the Beis Hamikdash, the ืžึทื—ึฐืžึทื“ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ื›ึถื. The ืึฒื ึดื™ ืœึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ื•ึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ืœึดื™ of Elul brings the ื•ึดื™ืึทืœึฐึผืœื•ึผืŸ, the ability to see and inspect ourselves.

All year long, if weโ€™re distant from Hakadosh Baruch Hu, then itโ€™s very hard to see things properly, as we are subject to the shochad of the yetzer hara. But during Elul, when we give ourselves the opportunity to feel closeness to Hakadosh Baruch Hu, weโ€™re less dependent on the pleasures of the world, so we can see things properly.

We can now understand the minhag to begin Selichos four days before Rosh Hashanah, in order to do bikur mumin on ourselves. True, throughout the year itโ€™s hard for a person to see his own flaws, but after three weeks of Elul, just a few days before Rosh Hashanah, when the ืึฒื ึดื™ ืœึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ื•ึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ืœึดื™ is intensifying, that clears up our vision, and with that weโ€™re able to do bikur mumin. We should be zocheh to feel the kirvas Elokim of ืึฒื ึดื™ ืœึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ื•ึฐื“ื•ึนื“ึดื™ ืœึดื™ and through that improve our vision and be zocheh to do a proper bikur mumin of ื•ึฐื”ึธืึตืจ ืขึตื™ื ึตื™ื ื•ึผ ื‘ึฐึผืชื•ืจึธืชึถืšึธ.
