Parashas Eikev

Harav Hagaon Binyamin Cohen shlita

There are six zechiros that many people say after Shacharis every day. The fourth zechirah is that of the eigel, and is found in this weekโ€™s parashah, at the beginning of the following passuk: ื–ึฐื›ึนืจ ืึทืœ ืชึดึผืฉึฐืื›ึทึผื— ืึตืช ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดืงึฐืฆึทืคึฐืชึธึผ ืึถืช ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ื‘ึทึผืžึดึผื“ึฐื‘ึธึผืจ ืœึฐืžึดืŸ ื”ึทื™ึผื•ึนื ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื™ึธืฆึธืืชึธ ืžึตืึถืจึถืฅ ืžึดืฆึฐืจึทื™ึดื ืขึทื“ ื‘ึนึผืึฒื›ึถื ืขึทื“ ื”ึทืžึธึผืงื•ึนื ื”ึทื–ึถึผื” ืžึทืžึฐืจึดื™ื ื”ึฑื™ึดื™ืชึถื ืขึดื ื”’ โ€” remember, and donโ€™t forget, how you angered Hakadosh Baruch Hu by rebelling against Him. Interestingly, the passuk says: ืžึทืžึฐืจึดื™ื ื”ึฑื™ึดื™ืชึถื ืขึดื ื”’, which literally means, โ€œYou were rebellious with Hashem.โ€ Shouldnโ€™t it say: ืžึทืžึฐืจึดื™ื ื”ึฑื™ึดื™ืชึถื ื ึถื’ึถื“ ื”’, you were rebellious against Hashem?

R’ Tzadok HaKohen (Pri Tzaddik, Maamar 1, Maamarei Chodesh Av) explains that the Torah is hinting that although Klal Yisrael sinned grievously with the cheit haโ€™eigel, violating the first two of the Aseres Hadibros โ€”ืึธื ึนื›ึดื™ ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ย andืœึนื ื™ึดื”ึฐื™ึถื” ืœึฐืšึธย  โ€” they were nevertheless connected to Hashem and โ€œwithโ€ Him. He adds that because a Yid remains with Hashem even when he does an aveirah, when he does teshuvah, his aveiros become zechuyos.

The idea that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is with us even after a terrible cheit is reflected in the passuk in Parashas Balak: Rashi comments: ืืคื™ืœื• ืžื›ืขื™ืกื™ืŸ ื•ืžืžืจื™ืŸ ืœืคื ื™ื• ืื™ื ื• ื–ื– ืžืชื•ื›ื โ€” even if they are rebellious Hakadosh Baruch Hu does not move from among them. This is one of the ten pesukim that we say in Malchuyos, and with it we convey that Hakadosh Baruch Hu is the King with Klal Yisrael.

A Rebellion With Hashem is More Severe

Perhaps we can offer a different explanation of why the Torah says ืžึทืžึฐืจึดื™ื ื”ึฑื™ึดื™ืชึถื ืขึดื ื”’.

The Ramban here notes that the Torah does not mention that Klal Yisrael were rebellious at the Yaf Suf or at Marah; it mentions only the rebelliousness of the eigel. He explains that those rebellions occurred before Kabbalas HaTorah, and after Kabbalas HaTorah they were more obligated to obey Hakadosh Baruch Hu, since He had entered a bris with them. Therefore, their rebelliousness after Kabbalas HaTorah was considered more severe. Perhaps the Torah is alluding to this when it says ืžึทืžึฐืจึดื™ื ื”ึฑื™ึดื™ืชึถื ืขึดื ื”’ โ€” you were with Hashem, in a bris, yet you rebelled against Him.

What is the mitzvah to remember that we angered Hashem with the eigel? The Sforno explains that the main point we need to remember is that Hashem became angry at us because we were an ืขึทื ืงึฐืฉึตืื” ืขึนืจึถืฃ โ€” a stiff-necked people. What does it mean to be a โ€œstiff-necked peopleโ€?

The Smak actually counts ื•ึฐืขึธืจึฐืคึฐึผื›ึถื ืœึนื ืชึทืงึฐืฉืื•ึผ ืขื•ึนื“ as a lav, connecting it with the mitzvas asei of ื•ึผืžึทืœึฐืชึถึผื ืึตืช ืขึธืจึฐืœึทืช ืœึฐื‘ึทื‘ึฐื›ึถื โ€” which, he explains, is a mitzvah to love tochachah, and to love the people who give it. Accordingly, the lav of ื•ึฐืขึธืจึฐืคึฐึผื›ึถื ืœึนื ืชึทืงึฐืฉืื•ึผ ืขื•ึนื“ is transgressed when people do not love tochachah and do not love the people who give it.

To be stiff-necked, then, is to be unwilling to be taught a lesson, unwilling to change. And that stubbornness, says Rโ€™ Yerucham Levovitz, was the root of the cheit haโ€™eigel.

The Mussar Imperative

At the beginning of Parashas Devarim, when Moshe Rabbeinu gave subtle mussar to Klal Yisrael by hinting at their previous transgressions in various places, he referred to the cheit haโ€™eigel by mentioning the place โ€œDi Zahav.โ€ Rashi explains that the cheit haโ€™eigel happened because they had a lot of money (zahav).

Was the cheit haโ€™eigel rooted in stubbornness, or in having too much money?

Perhaps we can explain that two are one and the same: Their stubborn unwillingness to change resulted from their having a lot of money and feeling too comfortable with their lifestyle and taavos. Because they had a lot of money and were enjoying themselves, they were not willing to grow.

To summarize, then, the mitzvah of ื–ึฐื›ึนืจ ืึทืœ ืชึดึผืฉึฐืื›ึทึผื— ืึตืช ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดืงึฐืฆึทืคึฐืชึธึผ ืึถืช ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ื‘ึทึผืžึดึผื“ึฐื‘ึธึผืจ requires us to remember that we angered Hakadosh Baruch Hu in the Midbar by being stiff-necked and unwilling to change. But yet we were rebellious with Hashem, for He is always with us, even if we do terrible aveiros.

In general, the Torah views Klal Yisraelโ€™s years in the Midbar in a very positive light, as the passuk states: ื–ึธื›ึทืจึฐืชึดึผื™ ืœึธืšึฐ ื—ึถืกึถื“ ื ึฐืขื•ึผืจึทื™ึดืšึฐ ืึทื”ึฒื‘ึทืช ื›ึฐึผืœื•ึผืœึนืชึธื™ึดืšึฐ ืœึถื›ึฐืชึตึผืšึฐ ืึทื—ึฒืจึทื™ ื‘ึทึผืžึดึผื“ึฐื‘ึธึผืจ ื‘ึฐึผืึถืจึถืฅ ืœึนื ื–ึฐืจื•ึผืขึธื”. This might seem like a bit of a contradiction to the mitzvah to remember that Hashem was very angry with us in the Midbar. According to the way we have explained this mitzvah, however, there is no contradiction. Hakadosh Baruch Hu has tremendous love and admiration for Klal Yisrael for following Him in the Midbar, and He wants us to continue this kesher and not to fall into the trap of being unwilling to change and therefore doing aveiros. Therefore, He cautions us: ื–ึฐื›ึนืจ ืึทืœ ืชึดึผืฉึฐืื›ึทึผื— ืึตืช ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดืงึฐืฆึทืคึฐืชึธึผ ืึถืช ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ื‘ึทึผืžึดึผื“ึฐื‘ึธึผืจ โ€” remember, and donโ€™t forget, that you were stiff-necked, and from now on, listen to the dvar Hashem and donโ€™t be so stubborn. Be willing to change and grow.

In a practical sense, then, this mitzvah of remembering the cheit haโ€™eigel obligates us to learn mussar daily, because in order to change we need to learn mussar.

When the Alter of Kelm opened his Beis Hamussar, someone asked him, โ€œWhat is this building? Is this a meshugeneh house?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ he replied. โ€œYou go in crazy, and you come out normal.โ€

This mitzvah of remembering the eigel also includes staying connected to a yeshiva, to a rosh yeshiva, to rebbeโ€™im, since a yeshiva is a place where you grow and change.

We have to continuously be mechazek ourselves to stay close to our yeshiva and to our rebbeim, and to ask them for advice โ€” this will allow us to fulfill this zechirah and perform the mitzvah of ื–ึฐื›ึนืจ ืึทืœ ืชึดึผืฉึฐืื›ึทึผื— ืึตืช ืึฒืฉึถืืจ ื”ึดืงึฐืฆึทืคึฐืชึธึผ ืึถืช ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ ื‘ึทึผืžึดึผื“ึฐื‘ึธึผืจ. By remembering that we angered Hakadosh Baruch Hu because we were stiff-necked, and resolving to be willing to change, we will be zocheh to much brachah and hatzlachah in our lives.

Gut Shabbos.
