Putting the Unity Back in Community

Parashas Devarim / Bein Hametzarim

Harav Hagaon Shmuel Friedman Shlita

We know that the timing of the weekly parashah is no accident, and the parashah contains allusions to the time of year and the events surrounding it. Parashas Devarim, specifically, reveals to us insights regarding Shiva Asar bโ€™Tammuz, the Three Weeks, the Nine Days, and Tisha B’Av.

The parashah begins with the words:ืึตืœึผึถื” ื”ึทื“ึผึฐื‘ึธืจึดื™ื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ื“ึผึดื‘ึผึถืจ ืžึนืฉืึถื” ืึถืœ ื›ึผึธืœ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ ื‘ึผึฐืขึตื‘ึถืจ ื”ึทื™ึผึทืจึฐื“ึผึตืŸ ื‘ึผึทืžึผึดื“ึฐื‘ึผึธืจ ื‘ึผึธืขึฒืจึธื‘ึธื” ืžื•ึนืœ ืกื•ึผืฃ ื‘ึผึตื™ืŸ ืคึผึธืืจึธืŸ ื•ึผื‘ึตื™ืŸ ืชึผึนืคึถืœ ื•ึฐืœึธื‘ึธืŸ ื•ึทื—ึฒืฆึตืจึนืช ื•ึฐื“ึดื™ ื–ึธื”ึธื‘. In this passuk, Moshe Rabbeinu is giving mussar to Klal Yisrael before his passing, but his rebuke is subtle and indirect. He did not want to state this rebuke explicitly, so as not to embarrass Klal Yisrael. Rashi explains how the places listed at the end of the passuk allude to the various aveiros that Klal Yisrael committed. The word ื‘ึผึทืžึผึดื“ึฐื‘ึผึธืจ, says Rashi, refers to when Klal Yisrael angered Hashem in the desert by saying: ืžึดื™ ื™ึดืชึผึตืŸ ืžื•ึผืชึตื ื•ึผ. The word ื‘ึผึธืขึฒืจึธื‘ึธื” alludes to the sin of Baal Peโ€™or, which was committed in Arvos Moav. The words ืžื•ึนืœ ืกื•ึผืฃ allude to the sin of rebelliousness at the Yam Suf, when Klal Yisrael said: ื”ึทืžึดื‘ึผึฐืœึดื™ ืึตื™ืŸ ืงึฐื‘ึธืจึดื™ื ื‘ึผึฐืžึดืฆึฐืจึทื™ึดื. The wordืคึผึธืืจึธืŸ ย alludes to the sin of the meraglim, and ืชึผึนืคึถืœ alludes to complaining about the mann, while ื•ึทื—ึฒืฆึตืจึนืช refers to the dispute of Korach, and ื•ึฐื“ึดื™ ื–ึธื”ึธื‘ refers to the cheit haโ€™eigel.

But what is the meaning of the words ื‘ึผึตื™ืŸ ืคึผึธืืจึธืŸ ื•ึผื‘ึตื™ืŸ ืชึผึนืคึถืœ, between Paran and Tofel? Why does the passuk relate these aveiros to โ€œbetweenโ€ these places?

The Kli Yakar links this passuk with the period of Bein Hametzarim โ€“ the period between Shiva Asar bโ€™Tammuz and Tisha B’Av.

Paran is an allusion to the sin of the meraglim, when Klal Yisrael cried for nothing and caused the night of Tisha B’Av to become a time of crying for all generations. Tofel, says the Kli Yakar, diverging from Rashi, is an allusion to the sin of the eigel. The word โ€œTofel,โ€ throughout Tanach, refers to avodah zarah, such as in the pesukim: ื•ึผื‘ึดื ึฐื‘ึดื™ืึตื™ ืฉืึนืžึฐืจื•ึนืŸ ืจึธืึดื™ืชึดื™ ืชึดืคึฐืœึธื” ื”ึดื ึผึทื‘ึผึฐืื•ึผ ื‘ึทื‘ึผึทืขึทืœ (Yirmiyahu 23:13); ื ึฐื‘ึดื™ืึทื™ึดืšึฐ ื—ึธื–ื•ึผ ืœึธืšึฐ ืฉืึธื•ึฐื ื•ึฐืชึธืคึตืœ (Eichah 2:14); and ื•ึฐืœึนื ื ึธืชึทืŸ ืชึผึดืคึฐืœึธื” ืœึตืืœึนืงึดื™ื (Iyov 1:22).

On the seventeenth day of Tammuz, Klal Yisrael made the eigel and the luchos were broken. Similarly, says the Kli Yakar, generations later the stone walls of Yerushalayim were breached on that same day. And between these two dates of 17 Tammuz and Tisha B’Av,ื›ึผึธืœ ืจึนื“ึฐืคึถื™ื”ึธ ื”ึดืฉึผื‚ึดื™ื’ื•ึผื”ึธ ื‘ึผึตื™ืŸ ื”ึทืžึผึฐืฆึธืจึดื™ื. Between the cheit haโ€™eigel and the cheit hameraglim, it was very hard for Klal Yisrael to stand up again. According to the natural way of the world, we have no protection. There are only two ways for us to be saved: either through the hashgachah ofย  Hashem, who saves those who cling to Him and fulfill the mitzvah of ื•ึฐืึธื”ึทื‘ึฐืชึผึธ ืึตืช ื”’ ืึฑืœึนืงึถื™ืšึธ, or by helping other Yidden and fulfilling the mitzvah of ื•ึฐืึธื”ึทื‘ึฐืชึผึธ ืœึฐืจึตืขึฒืšึธ ื›ึผึธืžื•ึนืšึธ. When people help each other, then even if they are sinful Hashem does not forsake them and they have hope; they have a way to save themselves bโ€™derech hateva.

Through the eigel and the meraglim, Klal Yisrael lost both of these options. When they sinned with the eigel, they turned away from the Ribbono Shel Olam and therefore lost His hashgachah. And when they sinned with the meraglim, the hatred within them caused them to lose the protection that comes from loving and helping one another.

The Kli Yakar offers a fascinating explanation for why this was so. Klal Yisrael claimed that Hashem had taken them out of Mitzrayim because He hated them:ื‘ึผึฐืฉื‚ึดื ึฐืึทืช ื”’ ืึนืชึธื ื•ึผ ื”ื•ึนืฆึดื™ืึธื ื•ึผ. If people think and talk that way, says the Kli Yakar, itโ€™s only because each of them harbors hatred toward one another, which is why they attribute hatred to the Ribbono Shel Olam as well. Furthermore, when people mistakenly think that the Ribbono Shel Olam hates them, chas vโ€™shalom, this causes that measure for measure, each person begins to harbor hatred toward the others. In that way, the cheit hameraglim spawned the sinas chinam that, along with the loss of Hashemโ€™s hashgachah, caused the destruction of both Batei Mikdash many years later.

On Shiva Asar bโ€™Tammuz, we lost the protection that comes with Hashemโ€™s hashgachah by making the eigel. On Tisha B’Av, we lost the protection that comes with loving each other through the cheit hameraglim. โ€œBetween the boundariesโ€ of these two days of misfortune, everything fell apart, as the passuk says: ย ื›ึผึธืœ ืจึนื“ึฐืคึถื™ื”ึธ ื”ึดืฉึผื‚ึดื™ื’ื•ึผื”ึธ ื‘ึผึตื™ืŸ ื”ึทืžึผึฐืฆึธืจึดื™ื. The fact that the passuk says ื›ึผึธืœ ืจึนื“ึฐืคึถื™ื”ึธ, All of her pursuers indicates that even the weakest pursuer managed to overtake Klal Yisrael, since they were lacking achdus and missing Hashemโ€™s hashgachah.

The Danger of โ€œInternal Woundsโ€

When Moshe Rabbeinu said, โ€œYou are standing between two boundaries: the sin of Paran (the meraglim) and the sin of Tofel (the eigel),โ€ he was urging Klal Yisrael to do teshuvah so that they should not have to cry for generations and should not lose the dveikus to Hashem, which would ultimately cause the wall of Yerushalayim to be breached.

The Chofetz Chaim, in his sefer Shemiras Halashon, cites a fascinating statement of Chazal: In the time of King Achav, who was a rasha, most of Klal Yisrael worshipped avodah zarah, yet when they went out to war they won, because they were united; there was no lashon hara or sinas chinam among them. But in the time of Dovid Hamelech, even though Dovid was a great tzaddik, Klal Yisrael would lose the wars they fought because there was friction, jealousy, and hatred among them.

The secret to success โ€“ whether within a community, within a neighborhood, within a family โ€“ is to have love and unity among people. Rav Chaim Shmuelevitz explains that whenever there is machlokes and lack of achdus, the Satan has the ability to prosecute, and thatโ€™s why they fell in battle. On the other hand, whenever there is peace among people, the Satan has no foothold, and even if people are unworthy, he cannot prosecute them. Thatโ€™s why Klal Yisrael was able to win wars in the time of the wicked Achav, when they worshipped avodah zarah.

The Vilna Gaon, in Even Shleimah, expresses a similar idea, based on the Gemara (Yoma 9) that states: ืจืืฉื•ื ื™ื ืฉื ืชื’ืœื” ืขื•ื ื ื ืชื’ืœื” ืงืฆื ืื—ืจื•ื ื™ื ืฉืœื ื ืชื’ืœื” ืขื•ื ื ืœื ื ืชื’ืœื” ืงืฆื. The first Beis Hamikdash was destroyed because of outward, obvious sins, and that destruction was less severe than the destruction of the second Beis Hamikdash, which happened because of hidden sins and has lasted until this day. During the second Beis Hamikdash, outwardly everything appeared to be fine, because the decline was on the inside.

By way of analogy, a wound on the outside of the body is usually easier to treat than an internal illness. A disease inside the body might not look bad on the outside, but itโ€™s much more dangerous.

Similarly, although at the time of the first churban Klal Yisrael was guilty of avodah zarah, gilui arayos, and shfichus damim, they nevertheless had bitachon in Hashem. At the time of the second churban, Klal Yisrael was involved in Torah and gemilus chassadim, and appeared on the outside to be righteous, but inside they harbored sinas chinam.

The Vilna Gaon explains that the fact that they had sinas chinam means they lacked bitachon in Hashem. Any time a person feels jealousy or hatred, it is a sign that his bitachon is deficient, for if he would really believe that everything is from the Ribbono Shel Olam then he would have no reason to be envious or resentful of others.

What we see from this is that even if a person is not perfect in his Torah and mitzvos, if he is connected to Hashem he can and should anticipate Hashemโ€™s yeshuah. We also see the importance of achdus in Klal Yisrael, for even when Klal Yisrael is not doing what they were supposed to do, Hashem still comes to their aid and saves them from tzaros as long as they are united. But if, chas vโ€™shalom, Klal Yisrael are not at peace with each other, that means their bitachon is defective, and because of that they have sinas chinam โ€“ which, in a certain sense, is worse than the three cardinal sins.

All this is alluded to in this weekโ€™s parashah. On the words:ืึตืœึผึถื” ื”ึทื“ึผึฐื‘ึธืจึดื™ื ืึฒืฉืึถืจ ื“ึผึดื‘ึผึถืจ ืžึนืฉืึถื” ืึถืœ ื›ึผึธืœ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ, the Ohr Hachaim explains that ื›ึผึธืœ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ refers to all generations of Klal Yisrael, meaning that Moshe Rabbeinuโ€™s mussar was relevant for his generation and for all generations to come, including ours. Similarly, the Gaon is quoted as saying that the words ืึถืœ ื›ึผึธืœ ื™ึดืฉื‚ึฐืจึธืึตืœ allude to the idea that Klal Yisrael has to be completely united.

May we be zocheh to the rebuilding of the Beis Hamikdash bโ€™meheirah veyameinu amen.
