In this weekโs parashah Klal Yisrael complains to Hashem and to Moshe Rabbeinu: ืึธืึธื ืึถืขึฑืึดืืชึปื ืึผ ืึดืึผึดืฆึฐืจึทืึดื ืึธืืึผืช ืึผึทืึผึดืึฐืึผึธืจ ืึผึดื ืึตืื ืึถืึถื ืึฐืึตืื ืึทืึดื ืึฐื ึทืคึฐืฉืึตื ืึผ ืงึธืฆึธื ืึผึทืึผึถืึถื ืึทืงึผึฐืึนืงึตื โ why did you take us out of Mitzrayim to die in this Midbar? We donโt have bread and water, and we are disgusted by the mann, which doesnโt digest normally. Hashem punished them by sending poisonous snakes, which killed many people: ืึทืึผึธืึธืช ืขึทื ืจึธื ืึดืึผึดืฉืึฐืจึธืึตื. When Klal Yisrael asked Moshe Rabbeinu to daven that Hashem should take away these snakes, Moshe davened, and Hashem told him to put a copper snake atop a pole: ืขึฒืฉืึตื ืึฐืึธ ืฉืึธืจึธืฃ ืึฐืฉืึดืื ืึนืชืึน ืขึทื ื ึตืก ืึฐืึธืึธื ืึผึธื ืึทื ึผึธืฉืืึผืึฐ ืึฐืจึธืึธื ืึนืชืึน ืึธืึธื. With that, the nechash hanechoshes came into being.
Several aspects of this episode require explanation. First, what was Klal Yisraelโs complaint against the mann? The mann was a wonderful thing: they always had food, there was enough food for what they needed, and, as Chazal teach, the mann tasted like anything they wanted, other than a few vegetables that could be damaging.
This special nes, that the mann tasted like any food a person wanted, requires explanation as well. We know that Klal Yisrael in the Midbar were essentially one big kollel, sitting and learning Torah for 40 years without any concerns: ืื ื ืืชื ื ืืชืืจื ืืืจืืฉ ืืื ืืืืืื ืืื. Is it beneficial to a personโs limud haTorah that he be able to eat all different types of foods? On the contrary, it would seem that this would have disturbed them from limud haTorah, and that it would have been better for them to have only the basics. So what was the purpose of this nes? And what was the middah kโneged middah in their being punished with poisonous snakes?
To be healed from these snakebites, the Yidden had to utilize an interesting remedy, gazing at this pole with the copper snake atop it and subjugating their hearts to their Father in Heaven. Chazal tell us (Rosh Hashanah 29a) that these snakebites did not heal so readily; they had to look at the nechash hanechoshes with kavanah, as the Gemara says: ืืื ื ืืฉ ืืืืช ืื ื ืืฉ ืืืื? ืืื ืืืื ืฉืืฉืจืื ืืกืชืืืื ืืืคื ืืขืื ืืืฉืขืืืื ืืช ืืื ืืืืืื ืฉืืฉืืื ืืื ืืชืจืคืืื, ืืื ืืื ืืื ื ืืืืงืื.
Looking up to Shomayim can inspire a person to subjugate his heart to Hashem, as the navi exhorts us (Yeshayah 40:26): ืฉืึฐืืึผ ืึธืจืึนื ืขึตืื ึตืืึถื ืึผืจึฐืืึผ ืึดื ืึธืจึธื ืึตืึผึถื. But why did the people have to look at the snake? Shouldnโt it be enough to look up to Shomayim and toward the Ribbono Shel Olam?
The Curse of No Connection
I heard a beautiful explanation from the author of the sefer Nachal Eliyahu. We know that the snake was cursed that it would always have food, wherever it goes. We might wonder, why is that a curse? If a person always has parnassah, is that a klalah? We call that a brachah!
This question is answered with a mashal attributed to the Shem MiShmuel. A father became very upset with his son and told him, โGet out of my house and donโt come back. Hereโs money โ you can go wherever you want, buy whatever you want, stay in any hotel you want, eat whatever you want to eat, live wherever you want. Just donโt come back to my house!โ
That is the worst klalah that a father could give his child! He doesnโt want to see him back; he doesnโt want to have a relationship with him. โIโll give you everything you need, just donโt talk to me or have anything to do with me.โ
Every animal can turn to the Ribbono Shel Olam to provide it with food when it needs it, as the passuk states: ืขึตืื ึตื ืึนื ืึตืึถืืึธ ืึฐืฉืึทืึผึตืจืึผ ืึฐืึทืชึผึธื ื ืึนืชึตื ืึธืึถื ืึถืช ืึธืึฐืึธื ืึผึฐืขึดืชึผืึน. Every animal, that is, except the nachash.
The Ramban, in Parashas Eikev, teaches that the advantage of Eretz Yisrael over Mitzrayim is that Mitzrayim had the Nile for irrigation, while in Eretz Yisrael you have to daven for rain, as thereโs no Nile or other river that can always be relied on for water and irrigation. Eretz Yisrael is described as a land that enjoys special Hashgachah pratis: ืชึผึธืึดืื ืขึตืื ึตื ื’ ืึฑืึนืงึถืืึธ ืึผึธืึผ ืึตืจึตืฉืึดืืช ืึทืฉึผืึธื ึธื ืึฐืขึทื ืึทืึฒืจึดืืช ืฉืึธื ึธื. When living there you are always dependent on Hashem for your produce to grow well, so you have to daven regularly and place your bitachon in Hashem. The more a person feels more dependent on Hakadosh Baruch Hu, the more kirvas Elokim he develops, and the more brachah he enjoys.
Even in Mitzrayim, where water was readily available from the Nile, some reliance on Hakadosh Baruch Hu was still necessary, even if the level of reliance required is far less than that required in Eretz Yisrael. The nachash, however, represents the ultimate lack of reliance on Hakadosh Baruch Hu. He has everything he needs, so he has no reason to forge a connection with the Ribbono Shel Olam.
The mann represented the highest level of reliance on Hashem. In the Midbar, a person had nothing to rely on besides Hashem; he had to rely on Hashem each day anew for the mann to come down. This involved a unique avodah and constituted a nisayon, in a certain sense, for the Dor Hamidbar.
Rashi, in explaining the middah kโneged middah of the Yidden being punished with snakes, says: ืืื ื ืืฉ ืฉืืงื ืขื ืืืฆืืช ืืื ืืืคืจืข ืืืืฆืืื ืืื. This, we understand: the snakes came because the Yidden had complaints and spoke lashon hara against Hashem, kivayachol, so they were punished through the nachash, who was the original speaker of lashon hara. But then Rashi adds: ืืื ื ืืฉ ืฉืื ืืืื ืื ื ืืขืืื ืื ืืขื ืืื ืืืคืจืข ืืืคืืื ืืืื, ืฉืืืจ ืืื ืืฉืชื ื ืืื ืืืื ืืขืืื โ let the nachash, whose food always has the same taste, that of earth, punish the ungrateful people who were given the mann, which had many different tastes.
Why were the Yidden considered ungrateful, and why did the middah kโneged middah of their punishment focus on the fact that the mann had many different tastes, as opposed to the food of the snakes, which always tastes the same?
The Role of Hischadshus
The Ramban, in Parashas Bo, says that the purpose of all of Creation is for two things: to thank Hashem for what we have and to ask Him for what we donโt have. These are two different methods of achieving kirvas Elokim.
The Ribbono Shel Olam gave the Dor Hamidbar mann, which had many different tastes. Each time a person experiences a new taste, thatโs a new opportunity for feeling and expressing gratitude. Every single time someone has a hischadshus โ a new situation, a new simchah, a new house, new clothing โ thatโs a reason to notice what the Ribbono Shel Olam is giving him and to thank the Ribbono Shel Olam for what he has received.
The snake does not have this hischadshus. Nor does it ever have to ask for its food. It represents the epitome of having no connection to the Ribbono Shel Olam.
The recipients of the mann, on the other hand, had to rely on Hashem completely for their sustenance and always ask Him for it. And when it came down, it had many different tastes, enabling the recipients to constantly feel gratitude to Hakadosh Baruch Hu for what He had given them. When they complained about the mann, they were punished through the nachash, which has no hischadshus in life and never experiences any different tastes.
The Ribbono Shel Olam was trying to convey to Klal Yisrael that they should look up to Shomayim, subjugate their hearts to Him, and realize where everything comes from. The advantage of the mann was that it required them to do this constantly. They also always experienced hischadshus from the different tastes of the mann, spurring them to be makir tov to the Ribbono Shel Olam for what He had given them.
So yes, the Yidden had to look up to Shomayim, but they also had to gaze at the snake to recognize where they had gone wrong. The nachash was the polar opposite of them: it doesnโt taste anything and doesnโt experiences hischadshus, so it is not makir tov to the Ribbono Shel Olam, and it doesnโt ask the Ribbono Shel Olam for anything because it always has its needs met.
We are now living in a time where we feel, in a certain sense, that we always have to ask the Ribbono Shel Olam for our health, and daven for the overall situation in the world. With the virus thatโs going around, thereโs no clarity, and we donโt know whatโs going to be in the future. This offers us a certain opportunity for kirvas Elokim, in which we can thank the Ribbono Shel Olam for what we have and ask Him to keep us healthy and safeguard our parnassah.
We should be zoche to use this time for kirvas Elokim, to constantly thank the Ribbono Shel Olam and ask him, every single day, for all the things we need. Through subjugating our hearts to Him in this way, may we be zocheh, along with all of Klal Yisrael, to a big yeshuah.
