Harav Hagaon Yaakov Moshe Katz Shlita

Choosing the Best

Parashas Behaaloscha starts with a discussion of Aharonโ€™s lighting the neiros, and Rashi questions why this is juxtaposed with the offerings of the nesiโ€™im. He answers that Aharon felt bad because all the nesiโ€™im offered korbanos during the Chanukas HaMishkan, and he wasnโ€™t part of it, so Hashem told him, โ€œYours is greater than theirs.โ€

The Rambam asks: Is lighting the menorah the only avodah Aharon Hakohen performed that the nesiโ€™im didnโ€™t? Aharon did many unique things: He offered korbanos, brought the ketores, and performed the avodah on Yom Kippur. Even if on one occasion the nesiโ€™im did something that he didnโ€™t do, he still did so many more things that they didnโ€™t do. So why did he feel so bad?

R’ Chatzkel Levenstein explains this based on the passuk: ืึนื”ึตื‘ ื›ึถึผืกึถืฃ ืœึนื ื™ึดืฉึฐื‚ื‘ึทึผืข ื›ึถึผืกึถืฃ. Did you ever hear someone say, โ€œNow that Iโ€™m a millionaire, Iโ€™m very happy, because now Iโ€™m not going to have to work so hard any more or invest my moneyโ€? No! If you make a million, youโ€™re thinking already about making the next million. Once you make a few million, youโ€™re thinking about a billion. The more you have, the more you want. Why? Because money makes a big difference in your life, enhancing your existence. Every person wants the best for himself, and when you want the best, you can never have enough. If thereโ€™s something new that he doesnโ€™t have, he wants it. He wants the most beautiful house and the latest model car, with all the trimmings. If his neighbor has a pool, he wants one too. He wants all the pleasures in life โ€” because a person wants to have the best. Thatโ€™s human nature.

The difference between Aharon and other people is that other people typically look for whatโ€™s best for them in the realm of gashmiyus, and forget about the world of ruchniyus. Aharon Hakohen, in contrast, knew that ruchniyus is whatโ€™s really important and best for a person.

When we see someone who has a really cool car, we think, โ€œMmm, I wouldnโ€™t mind having that car.โ€ When we hear that someone is going on a vacation, we donโ€™t say, โ€œWell, I already went on seventeen vacations and I did a lot of other things in my lifeโ€; we say โ€œMmm, I want that too.โ€

When it came to ruchniyus, Aharon was exactly the same way. He also said, โ€œI want the bestโ€ โ€” but he knew clearly what was best. Even though he did a lot and had a lot, when he saw the korbanos of the nesiโ€™im, and realized that they had done something that he hadnโ€™t, he wanted that spiritual achievement as well.

Your Environment Defines Your Goals

This is why it really matters where you hang out and whom you hang around with.

If youโ€™re living in a world where everyoneโ€™s oohing and aahing about this oneโ€™s car, the money that one made so quickly, and the one who is being honored, then thatโ€™s whatโ€™s going to seem meaningful to you. But if you associate with tzaddikim and talmidei chachamim, for whom the world of ruchniyus is what counts, that helps to impress upon you that thereโ€™s never enough Torah. You see the way they learn Torah, the way they do mitzvos, the way they help people, and the way they always want more Torah and mitzvos, and it inspires you.

We find a similar idea later in the parashah, regarding Pesach Sheini. The people who were tamei were exempt from bringing a Korban Pesach. They could have thought, โ€œGreat! Now weโ€™re off the hook!โ€ But instead they asked: ืœึธืžึธึผื” ื ึดื’ึธึผืจึทืข?

The Ohr Hachaim explains that they knew they were tamei and they couldnโ€™t bring the Korban Pesach. They were not asking a halachic question of whether they could bring the korban; their question was much deeper: โ€œWe are losing out,โ€ they were saying. โ€œWe see other people bringing the Korban Pesach โ€” why canโ€™t we have this opportunity?โ€ Similarly, a person might see people shteiging in the beis midrash on Sunday and feel ืœึธืžึธึผื” ื ึดื’ึธึผืจึทืข โ€” why am I losing out? Why am I sitting on the couch wasting time?

Buried by Taavah

Later in the parashah, we find the flipside of this lesson. The Yidden had the mann, which featured so many delicious flavors, but was missing a few tastes: ืึตืช ื”ึทืงึดึผืฉึปึผืืึดื™ื ื•ึฐืึตืช ื”ึธืึฒื‘ึทื˜ึดึผื—ึดื™ื ื•ึฐืึถืช ื”ึถื—ึธืฆึดื™ืจ ื•ึฐืึถืช ื”ึทื‘ึฐึผืฆึธืœึดื™ื ื•ึฐืึถืช ื”ึทืฉึผืื•ึผืžึดื™ื. Were they happy with their ice cream parlor that had a hundred flavors? No! โ€œDid you hear about the new place that just opened? It has a hundred and eighty flavors, Iโ€™m going!โ€ They were missing the meat; they wanted more. So Hakadosh Baruch Hu sent them the slav, and they ate it until they died, in a place called Kivros Hataavah.

R’ Chatzkel Levenstein notes the significance of this name: Their taavah buried them.

A person has a choice whether his aspirations will be in ruchniyus or in gashmiyus. If his sheโ€™ifos are in gashmiyus, heโ€™ll never have enough; heโ€™s always going to strive to attain more and more. Ultimately, heโ€™ll find himself in Kivros Hataavah, buried by his desires and unable to elevate himself to become the great person he could have been.

Why Run Away?

Where did this decline start? The Ramban, citing the Gemara in Shabbos, says that the reason backward nuns are placed around the pesukim beginning ื•ึทื™ึฐื”ึดื™ ื‘ึดึผื ึฐืกึนืขึท ื”ึธืึธืจึนืŸ is to insert a break between puraniyos, the first of which was ื•ึทื™ึดึผืกึฐืขื•ึผ ืžึตื”ึทืจ ื”’. What puranus was that? The Ramban explains that the Yidden left Har Sinai โ€œื›ืชื™ื ื•ืง ื”ื‘ื•ืจื— ืžื‘ื™ืช ื”ืกืคืจ,โ€ like a child running out of school.

At the end of a shiur, you can see people like these. They are the ones who realize that the rebbi is winding down, and start looking at the clock every two seconds, banging their shtenders, and getting up. The rebbi, nebach, is still trying to say one more vort, but theyโ€™re already plotzing to get out. โ€œWhen is this shiur over?โ€ theyโ€™re wondering. โ€œItโ€™s so long! Itโ€™s boring. I donโ€™t connect to this.โ€ These people are ื›ืชื™ื ื•ืง ื”ื‘ื•ืจื— ืžื‘ื™ืช ื”ืกืคืจ. The beis midrash feels like jail to them, because they have no appreciation of what theyโ€™re doing there, and theyโ€™d rather be doing a hundred other things.

The Yidden were learning and shteiging at Har Sinai, but then they had enough: ื•ึทื™ึดึผืกึฐืขื•ึผ ืžึตื”ึทืจ ื”’. They didnโ€™t realize that every word of Torah has the power to uplift and transform a person, bringing him unparalleled reward. All the pleasure in this world cannot rival one moment of pleasure in the next world.

A child running away from school is following his desire for the taavos of this world. And the reason a person behaves this way is simple: He wants whatโ€™s best for him.

Then you have people who say, โ€œOoh, I canโ€™t wait for Sunday when I can learn โ€” it makes my life! Iโ€™m waiting to do that mitzvah, give that tzedakah, do that kibbud av vโ€™eim. It empowers me!โ€

The question then becomes, what do you think is best for you? Itโ€™s either-or: ื–ื” ืœืขื•ืžืช ื–ื” ืขืฉื” ื”ืืœืงื™ื. When a person understands that ruchniyus is the best thing in the world for him, then that becomes his sheโ€™ifah in life, and he runs after ruchniyus โ€” as we see at the beginning of the parashah, with Aharon Hakohen and Pesach Sheini. But the Yidden didnโ€™t learn from Aharon; they learned from the eirev rav. They hung around with the wrong people, and what happened? โ€œOy, I canโ€™t! The shiur is so long! I canโ€™t go to learn, Iโ€™m plotzing, itโ€™s so hard for me.โ€

We see, then, that there is a ladder of aliyah and a ladder of yeridah. Ask yourself: where do you feel you want the best in life? In your clothing? Your car? Your house? Your vacation? Your bank account? Or do you want your best in ruchniyus? What is your goal in life? In which area do you ask: ืœึธืžึธึผื” ื ึดื’ึธึผืจึทืข?

The truth is that deep down, every Yid knows the truth; I donโ€™t have to convince you, because you all know inside whatโ€™s real. Itโ€™s just good to remind ourselves and reignite that deep sheโ€™ifah inside of ourselves.

Hashem should help all of us to perfect ourselves, to be zocheh to ruchniyus, and to grow more and more.
