Yaakov Avinuโ€™s Victory

Parshas Vayishlach

Harav Hagaon Elimelech Reznick Shlita

In this parshah we find the battle between Yaakov and the malach: ื•ึทื™ึดึผื•ึธึผืชึตืจ ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน ื•ึทื™ึตึผืึธื‘ึตืง ืึดื™ืฉื ืขึดืžึผื•ึน ืขึทื“ ืขึฒืœื•ึนืช ื”ึทืฉึธึผืื—ึทืจ. The simple explanation is that this malach was the saro shel Eisav, and when he couldnโ€™t prevail over Yaakov โ€” ื•ึทื™ึทึผืจึฐื ื›ึดึผื™ ืœึนื ื™ึธื›ึนืœ ืœื•ึน โ€” he found a way to harm Yaakov, but in the end Yaakov wouldnโ€™t let him go and it seems that Yaakov won the fight. Then, the malach asked Yaakov for his name and gave him a berachah:

For winning this battle, Yaakov was zocheh to have his name changed to Yisrael. Later in the parshah, Hakadosh Baruch Hu substantiates this name change by saying,

The Gemara (Berachos 13) says that there were two Avos who were zocheh to a name change: Avraham and Yaakov. The Gemara adds that anyone who calls Avraham by his previous name, Avram, has sinned, since the passuk says, If so, the Gemara wonders, why donโ€™t we say the same about Yaakov? Yaakovโ€™s name was similarly changed, to Yisrael, so why donโ€™t we say that it is a sin to call him by his original name? The Gemara explains that Yaakov may still be called by that name because Hakadosh Baruch Hu Himself later addresses Yaakov by that name, as the passuk says,

But why are these two name changes different?

A name change always reflects that the personโ€™s essence has changed, and that he has ascended to a new level in his avodas Hashem. When Avrahamโ€™s name was changed, his old name was not meant to be remembered. We can explain that Avraham Avinuโ€™s name change did not merely reflect a new madreigah; it also reflected a detachment from his past. He moved up in such a way that recalling what he once was would constitute a bizayon. Imagine that a person was once a janitor, and after many years of hard work he moved up the corporate ladder and eventually becomes the CEO. Mentioning that he was once a janitor would be an embarrassment to him. Similarly, the name Avraham โ€” av hamon goyim โ€” represents a new identity that is completely detached from the name Avram. This change of essence and ascent to new heights eradicated the lower madreigos he was once at.

Yaakovโ€™s name change was different. Although he fought with the sar of Eisav and prevailed, that did not uproot the name Yaakov, which remained his name forever. What is the significance of that name, and why couldnโ€™t it be given up once it was supplanted by the name Yisrael?

Donโ€™t Give Up

In Parshas Toldos we find that Yaakov Avinu was named Yaakov because when he was born, he was holding onto the heel โ€” the eikev โ€” of Eisav. He wanted to be the bechor, but Eisav didnโ€™t let. But even though Eisav emerged first, Yaakov kept his hand there. He was holding on.

We can glean two points from this.

The first point is that when a person is holding on to something and he doesnโ€™t have it yet, he is showing what his sheโ€™ifos are and where he wants to go. The Gemara says (Niddah 30b) that before a baby is born, he is compelled to make a shevuah, part of which is: ืชื”ื™ ืฆื“ื™ืง ื•ืืœ ืชื”ื™ ืจืฉืข, ื•ืืคื™ืœื• ื›ืœ ื”ืขื•ืœื ื›ื•ืœื• ืื•ืžืจื™ื ืœืš ืฆื“ื™ืง ืืชื”, ื”ื™ื” ื‘ืขื™ื ื™ืš ื›ืจืฉืข. The mefarshim wonder what it means that he is supposed to consider himself a rasha even if the entire world tells him that he is a tzaddik. Is that the most important thing a person must promise to uphold before he is born? We can understand that he must promise to be a tzaddik and not a rasha, but why does he have to promise, even before setting foot in Olam Hazeh, that he will consider himself a rasha? If everyone is telling him that he is a tzaddik, presumably he is one!

Furthermore, as the Baal HaTanya asks at the beginning of his sefer, the Mishnah explicitly instructs a person not to see himself as a rasha โ€” ืืœ ืชื”ื™ ืจืฉืข ื‘ืคื ื™ ืขืฆืžืš โ€” so how can a person be made to swear that he will view himself that way? Rabbeinu Yonah discusses this in Avos. And the answer that arises from their words is that when the person is told ื”ื™ื” ื‘ืขื™ื ื™ืš ื›ืจืฉืข, that doesnโ€™t means he should consider himself a bad person. In this context, โ€œrashaโ€ means the opposite of someone who is tzaddik bโ€™din โ€” vindicated. If a person feels that he made it, and heโ€™s a success, then he is basically declaring that he has no room to grow. Being a rasha in your own eyes means that you know that you have more to accomplish.

We are sent to Olam Hazeh to grow: to do mitzvos, to learn Torah, and to continually elevate ourselves. If a person thinks that he made it โ€” heโ€™s a tzaddik, and he canโ€™t become any better โ€” then he has no place in this world; he might as well die. The purpose of being here, in this prozdor, is to keep rising, one level after another. And since that is our entire reason for being here, we each have to make that shevuah that we are going to view ourselves as still having room to grow and improve. Then, even if everyone pats you on the back and says, โ€œYouโ€™re a tzaddik โ€” youโ€™re the best davener and the best learner, and we all wish we can be like you,โ€ youโ€™ll go home and tell yourself, โ€œBaruch Hashem, I reached this point, but thereโ€™s more to grow and more for me to fix.โ€

Thatโ€™s what it means that Yaakov โ€œholds on.โ€ He maintains his sheโ€™ifos and strives to reach the next level. Even if he was an ish tam yosheiv ohalim practically from birth, he still had his eyes on the bechorah and the berachos, because he yearned to grow more and more. Thatโ€™s the first point we learn from the name Yaakov enduring even after he prevailed over the malach and earned the name Yisrael.

Hold On to What You Have

The second point that relates to Yaakovโ€™s holding on is that holding on is an expression of patience, continually doing what you set out to do without giving up or despairing. A person has an aspiration to achieve something, and even if he didnโ€™t get it yet, he doesnโ€™t let go. Thatโ€™s what holding on represents. Yaakov Avinu suffered greatly from Eisav, but he refused to let go, holding on even from the moment of birth: โ€œI didnโ€™t yet get what I aspire to, but Iโ€™m going to be patient and continue doing my avodah until the right opportunity presents itself for me to acquire the bechorah and the berachos.โ€

When a person wants to win a battle or reach a madreigah, the process can be difficult. But if heโ€™s willing to hold on โ€” to his sedarim, his davening, his chessed โ€” heโ€™ll eventually succeed. True, he may not have reached the place he would like to be, or become the person he hopes to become, but if he holds on and doesnโ€™t let go of what he has, heโ€™ll get there. The yetzer hara tries to convince a person to give up โ€” โ€œyou didnโ€™t get there yet, youโ€™re not getting there ever, so you might as well drop itโ€ โ€” but the Yaakov Avinu approach is to hold on.

In this battle between Yaakov and the malach, itโ€™s hard to see who actually won. They were engaged in a wrestling match, as it were, where the dust rose and neither one was able to throw the other down. In what sense, then, did Yaakov Avinu win? The answer is that he held on. Yes, he got hit โ€” ื•ึทืชึตึผืงึทืข ื›ึทึผืฃ ื™ึถืจึถืšึฐ ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ โ€” but he didnโ€™t let go. He refused to release the malach, and continued to hold on.

Did Yaakov triumph over the malach? In the simple sense, no. But he did win in the sense that he didnโ€™t give up, and held on to where he was, to his dveikus baShem, as the Sforno says. The reason the malach was unable to prevail is that he stood there, holding on tooth and nail to all the madreigos he had attained, refusing to let go. This was not a time of aliyah, a time to move up and become greater. The malach had come to drag him down, but he wouldnโ€™t let go. And through that he was zocheh to the name Yisrael.

Who exactly was this malach that Yaakov fought with? The basic understanding is that it was saro shel Eisav, but the Gemara in Chullin brings other views, and the Yalkut Shimoni says something astounding. This man was the malach Michoel. Now, Michoel is generally a malach of rachamim. After this battle, he said to Yaakov, โ€œYou are so scared of Eisav โ€” look how intensely you are preparing to meet him. But Iโ€™m a malach and you were able to withstand me, so you donโ€™t have to be afraid of Eisav.โ€

The Yalkut is conveying that the whole reason Hakadosh Baruch Hu sent this malach to fight Yaakov was as a nisayon. The purpose of the struggle was so that Yaakov could prove to himself that he has the kochos to hold on, and he shouldnโ€™t be afraid.

This is a lesson for all of us. Hakadosh Baruch Hu sends us certain struggles and difficulties, but we have to realize that the objective of a nisayon is to actualize our potential. Hakadosh Baruch Hu is training us, giving us the kochos to grow higher. Yaakov Avinu received the kochos here to endure the entire galus, until Moshiachโ€™s arrival, and we inherited those abilities; every nisayon we face is a training course so that we should realize the kochos we have within us. So even after Yaakov battled the malach and received the new name Yisrael, the Yaakov is constantly needed.

You Have All the Tools

The simple meaning of the words ื•ึทื™ึดึผื•ึธึผืชึตืจ ื™ึทืขึฒืงึนื‘ ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน is that Yaakov was left alone, and thatโ€™s why he encountered the antagonist who fought with him. In this understanding, ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน is something negative. The Tur explains that the reason Klal Yisrael may not eat the gid hanasheh is as a penalty for Yaakovโ€™s children leaving their father alone. But Rโ€™ Yerucham cites the Midrash that interprets ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน as something positive, as it is used regarding Hashem: ื•ึฐื ึดืฉึฐื‚ื’ึทึผื‘ ื”’ ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน.

Rโ€™ Yerucham explains that ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน means that the pinnacle of shleimus is when you have everything inside you and you donโ€™t have to looks for kochos from the outside. Just as the Eibishter possesses the ultimate shleimus, He gave Yaakov Avinu โ€” and every person โ€” the ability to independently triumph over the yetzer hara and grow. Itโ€™s worth seeing his discussion of this topic.

This is reminiscent of the berachah we say each morning, Rโ€™ Wolbe cites the mefarshim that explain that this means that each and every day you have all the tools you need in order to succeed. When a plumber heads out to a job, he brings his toolbox; without his tools, he canโ€™t do his work. Every day we make this berachah and declare that Hakadosh Baruch Hu gave us a toolbox with everything we need. When the neshamah comes back into our body each morning it brings along everything we need in order to accomplish everything we have to do today. And thatโ€™s a manifestation of the ืœึฐื‘ึทื“ึผื•ึน that we each have. Even if we are feeling a sense of aloneness, we have all the tools for success.

Gut Shabbos.
